Keep Your cuticles healthy

Healthy cuticles mean healthy nails. The function of Cuticles is to protect soft new nails as they grow out from under your skin.

A tip that will help you Keep yours soft and smooth is the following:

  • Soak your fingers once a week, for 5 minutes,in a mixture of warm milk and almond oil. Moisturizers containing vitamin E and/or olive oil will also be effective. This will protect your cuticles from dehidration, specially in winter.

DonĀ“t let a hangnail hung you up

Here comes a useful tip for a correct hangnail clipping:

  • Clip it close to the base and then soak your finger for 10 minutes in a solution made with 2 tablespoons of boiled water, 1 dropperful each of echinacea liquid extract (Echinaceae spp) and St. John’s wort liquid extract (Hypericum perforatum), and a drop each of lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia) and tea tree essential oil (Melaleuca alternifolia). Stir the mixture and let it cool for one minute before immersing your finger. The echinacea, lavender, and tea tree kill germs and the St. John’s wort soothes the pain, says Stoneridge, N.Y.-based herbalist Dina Falconi.

How to Prevent a Hangnail

Keep the skin around your nails soft and supple and you won’t get hangnails. To do that, apply a skin-softening salve made with comfrey root (Symphytum officinale) or moisturizing shea or cocoa butter (available at natural food stores) to your cuticles at least once every day, says Stoneridge, N.Y.-based herbalist Dina Falconi. And eat more foods with omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon and flaxseeds), which help your skin retain moisture.
