Nowadays, good shampoos are truly expensive, and the cheaper ones are full of dangerous chemicals that threaten our health and our hair appearance. So, it doesn’t seem a crazy thing to make our own shampoo, don’t you think. Below are a few of my favorite homemade shampoos, ready to go in just a few minutes.

Remember that although the following ingredients are natural, some people may experience an allergic or adverse reaction. If you have skin allergies or are unsure about using any of the following ingredients or combination of ingredients, test the products on the inside of your elbow or wrist before washing or conditioning your hair. If there is any redness or irritation, discard the product and consider another option.

Quick-and-Easy Egg Shampoo

Ingredients

  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/2 tsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup Liquid Castle brand soap

Preparation

  1. Just mix the ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Apply to hair.
  3. It is good for all hair types.
  4. This shampoo should last one to two weeks.

Note: The egg strengthens the hair by adding protein, olive oil gives it gloss and sheen and lemon juice works as a clarifier.

Soapwart root shampoo

Ingredients

  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons dried soapwart root (chopped) (most health food stores would carry this)
  • 2 teaspoons Lemon Verbena or 2 teaspoons Catnip

Preparation

  1. Bring water to a boil add soapwart and simmer, cover for about 20 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat, add herb then allow mixture to cool.
  3. Strain the mixture keeping the liquid. Pour into a bottle.
  4. Makes enough for 6-7 shampoos.
  5. Must be used within 8-10 days.
  6. Store in a cool dark place.

Herbal Homemade Shampoo

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup of your favorite herbal tea, strongly brewed
  • 8 oz liquid castile soap

Preparation

  1. Add soap to tea.
  2. Stir over low heat until well blended.
  3. Store in a capped bottle.

Rosemary, Sage Shampoo

Ingredients

  • 4 oz of castile soap with any scent is that available – plain, peppermint, eucalyptus.
  • ½ oz of rosemary – stimulates the hair follicles and helps to prevent premature baldness
  • ½ oz of sage – has antioxidants and keeps things from spoiling and is antibacterial
  • ½ oz of nettles – acts as a blood purifier, blood stimulator, contains a large source of nutrients for hair growth
  • ½ of lavender – controls the production of sebaceous gland oil and reduces itchy and flaky scalp conditions
  • One empty 8 oz plastic bottle or any other empty shampoo or soap bottle.

Preparation

  1. Mix the herbs in a mason jar, which has a lid.
  2. Boil 2 cups of distilled water.
  3. Add 3 heaping tablespoons of the mixed herbs into the boiling water.
  4. Pull the boiling water and herbs off the stove.
  5. Let the herb mixture sit for 30 – 40 minutes.
  6. Put the 2000mg of MSM into the herb mixture after 30 minutes of cooling.
  7. After 40 minutes and the MSM are melted, strain the herbal mixture into a bowl.
