Sinus Infections: Thinking Outside of the Box
Submitted by Bhealthy2Sinus infections are very common. It is estimated that over 31 million Americans are diagnosed with a sinus infection each year. In fact, sinus infections are one of the most common reasons that people visit their doctor.
Once a doctor has determined that you have a sinus infection, the most common course of action has been and still is to prescribe a dosage of antibiotics in the attempt to kill the infection in the sinus cavities.
Another common action is to prescribe a steroid spray to mist into the sinus cavities. Sometimes both of these are prescribed at once.
While these may be the most common and accepted methods of treatment, does that mean they are the correct course of action?
A new British study involving 240 patients who were diagnosed with acute sinus infections has put this concept to the test.
Three quarters of the patients in the study were given antibiotics, steroid spays or a combination of both. The other one fourth of the participants were given placebo pills and sprays.
The results were quite interesting. Ten days later, those who were given the placebo pills and sprays were just as likely to be cured as those who took the antibiotics and steroid sprays.
This brings me back to a study that was conducted by the Mayo Clinic in 1999. The Mayo Clinic study found that in almost all cases of chronic sinusitis which is another name for chronic sinus infection, fungus was to blame, not bacteria.
Since antibiotics are only effective against bacteria, it makes sense why they may not be effective against sinus infections in general.
So when it comes to treating sinus infections, maybe it is time to think outside of the box. This box, in this case, being the normal course of action recommended by your doctor.
