Conserving our forests
Submitted by AlicinhaThe forest ecosystems occupy currently up to 3,866 million hectares, almost a third part of the lands emerged of the planet, what equals halfway of the surface that occupied some 8,000 years ago.
Of what remains us of original forest surface, only the fifth part has arrived to our days in a state of favorable conservation, what we would be able to call as last, forest borders forests without significant human alteration.
In the past decade a net loss of forest surface of 93.9 million hectares took place (5.6 million football grounds to the year). During this same period natural forests were transformed into agricultural and forest plantations to a rate of 16.1 million hectares a year, 94% in tropical zones, being the agricultural plantations 70% of this transformation.
