Company marketed product against cavities
Submitted by AlicinhaNEW YORK .- Basf, the global chemicals company, said they found a way to prevent bacteria from attacking tooth decay, a product that could be marketed as toothpaste, mouthwash and even candy possibly next year.
Using a microorganism associated with the crops used in the yogurt, the company based in Germany said they had devised a process that isolates the harmful bacteria in the mouth before it can bind with the sugar and form plaques.
The body and the bacteria are swallowed as part of the natural process of oral hygiene.
The bacteria known as Streptococcus mutans, does not imply any risk since they are regularly found in the mouth and humans digest constantly.
As part of a study, the firm provided to two groups of rats a diet high in sugar, but one added the new product, known as “pro-t-action”.
The deterioration of the dental group of rats with the product was much less pronounced than in the other.
The body active “pro-t-action” is dead, which means it does not need to be kept cold, such as yogurt and can be used in a variety of products such as non-sugary sweets, chewing gum, toothpaste and possibly liquefied. To be effective, the product must be in the mouth for at least 10 to 15 seconds.
