The Colombian Mountains, the fastest biodiversity destroyed place
Submitted by AlicinhaGermán Poveda, scientist, member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that expanding the agricultural frontier and the proliferation of illicit crops have been devastated nearly fifty per cent of the forests in several regions of the country, which is more dangerous on the mountains.
“The problem of deforestation is so severe that the tropical mountains of Colombia is the place where the earth is rapidly destroying the biodiversity. I think this is a fundamental threat to the country’s development.
We are talking about the disappearance of living things, both animal and plants, including insects, birds and botanical species of all kinds. I think it is time that politicians, academics and environmental authorities come into line, said Poveda.
The expert noted that the processes of deforestation contribute to increasing impacts of climate change and disturbance of riverbeds and ravines.
Global warming also threatens the Caribbean coast by sea level rise.
“Sea level is rising at rates that we did not expect and all the Caribbean coast is threatened to destroy their infrastructure. The island of San Andres is an ecosystem that is severely threatened because they would salinization of underground water reservoirs that the island has to supply its consumption, “explained the scientist.
Also, there is a projected increase in rainfall, which will be more intense and frequent, especially in the Andean region.
