Sometimes it seems like absolutely none of the products that we purchase at the beauty supply store are working to help clear up, treat, or hydrate our skin.

Natural skin care options such as homemade face masks are an option you can try if the products you have been buying aren’t making a positive impact upon your skin’s health, or if you’re a person who just prefers to stay away from chemicals whenever possible.

Natural, DIY options are usually gentler and much less expensive than store bought masks and you may even have a few of the ingredients in your kitchen right now.

Below are 5 natural DIY facial mask recipes that can help to improve your skin’s health. Before fully applying any of these masks, however, you should do a patch test to ensure you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients.

Honey and Brown Sugar Mask

A honey and brown sugar mask is a great option for those with oily skin.

All you need is a jar of pure honey and a bag of brown sugar – two ingredients that are easily accessible at almost any grocery store.

The honey has antibacterial properties and it isn’t as harsh as alcohol infused acne treatment products. It also absorbs oils and moisturizes the skin simultaneously while alcohol acne products dries it out and cause overproduction of oil at time.

The brown sugar, on the other hand, creates a light exfoliating effect that assists with improving skin cell turnover to allow breakouts to go away quicker and keep them at bay.

To prepare this mask, add 2 tablespoons of both the honey and brown sugar to a bowl and then use the spoon to combine them.

Apply the mask to your face with either a spatula, brush, or with clean fingers. Use a thin layer all over your face.

Let the mask sit on your face for about ten to fifteen minutes and then carefully remove it with a warm wet towel.

Summer Strawberry Mask

A summer strawberry mask is good for all skin types.

It is fitting for anyone who wants a light exfoliation with plenty of healthy antioxidants soothing their face. Strawberries are good for your pores and are full of antioxidants to enrich your skin and cancel out many of the free radicals that lead to wrinkles and blemishes.

The other ingredients in this mask are honey and yogurt. The honey serves as a hydrating and antibacterial ingredient for your natural skin care while the yogurt contains lactic acid. Lactic acid is capable of dissolving old skin cells, and therefore assists with cell turnover.

To make the summer strawberry mask you will need a small bowl.

Place three strawberries (mashed or finely blended) and one ounce of lemon juice into the bowl and combine them together. Add one individual serving of Greek yogurt to the mixture. Lastly, add one ounce of honey.

Place the container in the freezer for 20 minutes then remove it and smear the mixture over your face.

Let the summer strawberry mask stand on your face for ten minutes and then remove it with a soft warm wash cloth.

Charcoal and Bentonite Clay Mask

Here is another great mask for those with oily and acne prone skin.

Activated charcoal is an excellent skin care ingredient for removing toxins and excess oil and bacteria from the skin, as well as reducing the appearance of pores. This is why charcoal face masks have risen in popularity so much in recent years.

Bentonite clay does much of the same but in a slightly different way which is why they are combined to make this deep cleansing face mask.

To create your own charcoal and bentonite clay mask at home, all you need are food grade activated charcoal powder, bentonite clay, and water.

Mix one tablespoon of activated charcoal powder, 1/2 tablespoon bentonite clay, and enough water to make a thick paste. Apply this mixture all over the face. Leave it on for fifteen minutes then wash it off with a warm washcloth.
