The list of the places, in no particular order is:

1 Riachuelo Basin, Argentina

The Riachuelo Basin is a waterway whose name is synonymous with pollution. More than 3,500 factories operate along the banks of the river, a landscape that also includes 13 slums, numerous illegal sewage pipes running directly into the river, and 42 open garbage dumps.

2 Yamuna River, India

The Yamuna is the largest tributary of the Ganges River. Where it flows through Delhi, it’s estimated that 58 percent of the city’s waste gets dumped straight into the river. Millions of Indians still rely on these murky, sewage-filled waters for washing, waste disposal and drinking water.

3 Chernobyl, Ukraine

Chernobyl is the town in northern Ukraine home to the Chernobyl disaster of 1986, the worst nuclear power plant accident in history. Once home to more than 14,000 residents, the town remains mostly uninhabited and unsafe today due to extensive radioactive contamination.

4 La Oroya, Peru

La Oroya is a soot-covered mining town in the Peruvian Andes. Ninety-nine percent of the children who live here have blood levels that exceed acceptable limits for lead poisoning, which can be directly attributed to an American-owned smelter that has been polluting the city since 1922.

5 Haiti

The nation of Haiti was once 60 percent covered in forest. Today, only 2 percent of the country still has standing trees. This picture shows an aerial of the border between Haiti (left) and the Dominican Republic (right). Haiti has cleared almost every tree right up to its borders.

Other toxic places are:

6 Citarum River, Indonesia

7 Linfen, China

8 The North Pacific Gyre

9 Rondônia, Brazil

10 Lake Karachay, Russia

11 Kabwe, Zambia

12 Appalachia, West Virginia

13 Dzerzhinsk, Russia

14 Vapi, India

15 Earth’s orbit

The experts said that they can restrict the hunt, the marine traffic and the petroleum activity out of the coast, but it will not be enough if the basic habitat of these animals, the ice, continues melting. Definitively, this goes beyond my scope “, said Joel Garlich-Miller, an expert in walruses of the Service of the Fishing and the Wild Life of The United States, in Anchorage.

Instead of happening the summer in the marine ice, thousands of walruses remained beached in land up to for three months.

If they continue the current trends, and the walruses have to remain on the coast every summer, it would be deprived of the food of the rich marine waters, said the biologist Tony Fischbach, of the Geological Service of The United States.

The Service of the Fishing and the Wild Life of The United States will have to decide if includes to the polar bears in the list of animals “threatened” with extinction due to the loss of marine ice immediately after the global warming. The polar bears will see to be in danger.

On the other hand, the seals of the region also run risk. These seals prosper under the marine ice. Immediately after the global warming, these caves are ruined on having begun the spring, and the puppies stay at the mercy of foxes, polar bears, and inclusive gulls and ravens.

The marine aptitude to absorb carbon dioxide is exhausting in another sample of the excessive emisión of gases greenhouse caused by the activity of the man in the Herat. A recently study of the Nacional Geographic indicated that between 2000 and 2007,as consecuense of the emisión of this gas the oceanic absorption of the carbon produced by the industrial activity diminished between 27 and one 24 per cent.

The absorption of the carbon dioxide (CO2) on the part of the oceans does not manage to equalize the quantity of carbon that the man is producing.

The scientists said that this is not that one has begun to reduce the oceanic absorption of CO2, but it is not increasing in the same pace of before.

And if the oceans continue being saturated, bigger will be the quantity of the gas that will be kept in an atmosphere that it(he,she) is registering an increase of his(her, your) temperature, it(he,she) indicated.

In last instance the oceans are who control what happens in the planet in meteorological terms.

The process across how the plants grow and produce more quantity of vegetable biomass is one of the most important biological processes in the planet.

An international team of scientists has presented a new study that demonstrates that, as the vegetable species in the world become extinct the natural habitats become less productive and contain a minor quantity of plants. This situation can compromise in a severe way many important benefits that we receive of the nature.

The productivity of the vegetables regulates the capacity of the nature to absorb of the atmosphere the greenhouse gases, as the carbon dioxide. Besides this regulates the capacity of the different ecosystems to produce oxygen, food, fibers and biocombustibles. The extinction of species might put in danger the benefits that the society receives of the nature.

The study directed by the University of California, summarizes the results of 44 experiments realized in places of the whole planet, which simulate the extinction of vegetable species, and demonstrates that the ecosystems with fewer species produce up to 50 per cent less of vegetable biomass that those with “more “natural” levels of diversity.

This study shows that the rich communities in diversity are more productive because the vegetables “complement each other” in how they use the biological resources. In other words, the different vegetable species play the only roles in the environment.

The extinction of species(kinds) is one of the most pronounced(marked) environmental changes of our time, and many scientists now raise that the Earth is in the middle of the sixth extinction in mass of the history of the life in our planet. Some estimations suggest that 50 per cent of the known species(kinds) they might be extinct at the end of the present century.

Pollution exposure during pregnancy reduces the IQ of children, according to a study published in the journal Pediatrics.

The study was conducted by the Columbia Center for Children’s Environmental Health and National Institute for Health of United States. At five years 249 children were studied from the City of new york. The results showed that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs from now on, the product of toxic pollutants daily activities like coal burning, diesel, petrol and gas, reduce the IQ of children from pregnancy.

Children who were exposed to high levels of pollution, high levels of PAH, showed a lower IQ of 0.36 points to children not exposed. Non-exposed children who were living in the countryside and cities, no large cities.

The study noted that the effects of pollution on the IQ was similar to those identified when the children were exposed to low levels of lead. Previous investigations have established that the lead and reduce the IQ was very damaging to the nervous system.

PAHs pollutants are factors that are issued by large cities. Every day increases causing environmental damage and reduced intellectual performance of children, which directly affects their future school and work.

DISCOVER THE KNOWLEDGE OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES WHO HAVE THROUGHOUT THE AGES MAINTAINED HEALTH, WELLNESS AND SUSTAINABILITY

At a time when institutions and ecosystems are collapsing, Blue Deer Center: A Healing Retreat Center and Home for Ancestral Traditions houses native teachings and practices that provide balance and sustainability. These ancient health and wellness methods recognize that the support of human life is the natural world: the plants, animals, sun, air, earth, and water. The world they teach of is alive and aware. When we relate to it with respect and love, the world responds. It brings healing, purpose and fulfillment to ourselves, our families and our communities.

Blue Deer Center (BDC), is a 501(c)3 non-profit retreat center, founded by Eliot Cowan, a noted author (Plant Spirit Medicine: The Healing Power of Plants) and esteemed healer in the Huichol Indian tradition. BDC mission is to provide an important setting for teachings and practices that promote balanced relationship with the natural world. BDC is nestled on a ninety-acre rural and peaceful setting, cradled by the tranquil mountains of the Catskills and adjacent to the cleansing waters of the Plattekill River in New York. In times past, the indigenous peoples held council fires on this land. Here they resolved conflicts and found healing.

When European man came to North America this land was clean, the waters were clear. In 500 years Modern man has nearly destroyed our planet, our animals, our plants and air. Genocide and war has escalated. Indigenous people knew how to get along in the world. They knew (and still know) what it took to sustain good health, harmonious communities and a peaceful and prosperous world at large. Their wisdom is not lost. Today their wisdom speaks again through the many programs led by internationally acclaimed healers and teachers who share and preserve their native wisdom though workshops, seminars, music, dance and community gatherings held at the Blue Deer Center.

Michael J. Fox, in an interview on the David Letterman show, spoke of his experience with the indigenous people of Bhutan. While in the Himalayan Mountains he found the Bhutanese government measured something they called the “Gross National Happiness,” whereby they make government decisions with an eye towards whether or not the decision will increase the happiness of their people. Community connection and a sense of purpose are important values to the Bhutanese as they are to BDC, whose mission is to provide a home for indigenous teachings and practices that promote balanced relationship with the natural world that can easily be integrated into the modern world.

About Blue Deer Center’s Founder Eliot Cowan:

Eliot Cowan, acclaimed author of Plant Spirit Medicine: The Healing Power of Plants, teacher, healer and shaman, works both in the U.S. and with the Huichol people of Mexico, having studied and practiced under the late Don Guadalupe Gonzalez Rios, a gifted Huichol Indian Healer.

Poten Story/Interview Ideas:

USEFUL NATIVE PRACTICES FOR IMPROVED HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Eliot Cowan, Founder of Blue Deer Center can share teachings and practices of selected native teachings that bridge the gap between nature and the Western world. These teachings, which (are practiced at Blue Deer Center) include the connection with fire, the connection to plants, nature and community will improve our health and quality of life while creating a sustainable environment for ourselves and our descendants.

“Give the world respect and gratitude and it gives back what we need for a good life.” states Cowan.

LEARN WHY NATIVE WISDOM OFFERS THE SECRET TO A QUALITY LIFE

Indigenous wisdom sees the natural world as sacred. It says, “Give the world respect and gratitude and it gives back what we need for a good life.” This simple yet profound concept is too often overlooked in Western society. The indigenous people have lived a good life for many thousands of years in their mountainous homeland in Northwestern Mexico. Never conquered, never converted to foreign religion, they continue to thrive today thanks to the wisdom teachings and healing practices of their elders.

Eliot Cowan, an anglo-American now in his sixties and founder of Blue Deer Center: A home for Ancestral Traditions, has completed a rigorous twelve-year apprenticeship with the indigenous elders of N. Mexico and will share from native perspectives how individuals, colleagues and co-workers can thrive in the world and live not from fear but from heart, which is what is taught at Blue Deer Center.

Germán Poveda, scientist, member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, said that expanding the agricultural frontier and the proliferation of illicit crops have been devastated nearly fifty per cent of the forests in several regions of the country, which is more dangerous on the mountains.

“The problem of deforestation is so severe that the tropical mountains of Colombia is the place where the earth is rapidly destroying the biodiversity. I think this is a fundamental threat to the country’s development.

We are talking about the disappearance of living things, both animal and plants, including insects, birds and botanical species of all kinds. I think it is time that politicians, academics and environmental authorities come into line, said Poveda.

The expert noted that the processes of deforestation contribute to increasing impacts of climate change and disturbance of riverbeds and ravines.

Global warming also threatens the Caribbean coast by sea level rise.

“Sea level is rising at rates that we did not expect and all the Caribbean coast is threatened to destroy their infrastructure. The island of San Andres is an ecosystem that is severely threatened because they would salinization of underground water reservoirs that the island has to supply its consumption, “explained the scientist.

Also, there is a projected increase in rainfall, which will be more intense and frequent, especially in the Andean region.

Climate change kills 300,000 people annually and represents an economic cost of 125,000 million dollars (90,000 million euros), according to a report of the Global Humanitarian Forum headed by Kofi Annan presented in London.

The publication of this study, which is backed by several institutes and international agencies, is part of a strategy that seeks to “put pressure” on governments to reach agreement at the Climate Summit to be held next December in Copenhagen.

This has been explained by Kofi Annan, who lamented that the economic crisis has pushed the fight against climate change to the background.

“Climate change is not going to wait,” said the former secretary general of the United Nations.

The report notes that this currently affects over 300 million people and have an especially detrimental impact on the poorest countries, which nonetheless emit only “1 percent of CO2.

The projections for 2030 indicate that followed, the change would be responsible for 500,000 deaths per year, would affect 600 million people and would cost 300,000 million dollars (about 215,000 million).

Replacing traditional stoves in Africa and Asia with low-soot varieties would buy time in the fight against climate change. But the acceptability of such new stoves to the rural poor is an obstacle.

Black carbon has newly emerged as the second biggest contributor to climate change. It is responsible for an estimated 18 per cent of warming compared with 40 per cent for carbon dioxide.

Africa and Asia produce the most soot because of the use of traditional cooking stoves, which also pose health and other environmental risks.

Low-soot stoves would rapidly reduce black carbon levels as the soot remains in the atmosphere for just a few weeks compared with years for carbon dioxide. New stoves produce 90 per cent less soot and cost around US$20 to make.

But many rural people earn only US$ 2,00 a day and cannot afford the stoves. There are also concerns about whether the stoves will produce food as tasty as that cooked on traditional stoves.

Six types of cooker are being piloted in Indian villages.
