Babies who are fed only with breast milk in the first stage of childhood tend to eat less later than babies fed with formula milk, according to recent research.

This type of food self-regulation may help explain why previous research has found that breast milk protects against obesity.

“The child self-regulation may, in fact, be affected by how the baby gets the milk,” said the autor of the study, Dr. Ruowei Li, medical epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC) of USA. “While taking more formula children, more likely they were to leave the empty bottle in late childhood,” said Li.

Childhood is a period that has an impact on self-regulation, and many other studies show that children’s development and the rapid increase in weight have an effect on later obesity.

What this means for parents who feed their babies with breast milk or formula stored, Li said, is that they need to pay special attention to the signals for feeding their babies.

The study included data from 1,250 babies born at term, and that weighed over 5 pounds (2.3 kilos) at birth. Their mothers completed a monthly questionnaire on feeding until infants met twelve months.

Playing make your belly look slim. This is the main conclusion of a detailed study by the University of Castilla-La Mancha, which shows that physical activity focused on the game during a period of approximately four and half hours a week reduce childhood obesity in 6%. The research draws this conclusion after two years working directly with more than a thousand students of a primary school.

Before starting work with the children, the researchers analyzed the physical conditions of the children. This found that 30.7% of girls and 31.8% of boys were overweight, data that “collided” with those related to the level of LDL (bad), that contrary to expectations, showed a significant decrease from studies by the same team of researchers in previous editions.

And so they designed a program of physical activity and competitive playfulness, called Movi, outside school hours to for half of the students, while the other half would not be any intervention. For two years, the children participated in Movi for 90 minutes three days a week, based largely on games designed especially to enhance cardio work, strength and muscular endurance and flexibility. The results are more than interesting: the rate of overweight decreased by 2% in boys and 6% in girls.

The study also reveals that the group which introduced the movie program improved self-esteem and sociability compared to the control group on which no intervention was not performed.

Offshore wind energy is, as the onshore wind, an application of the force produced by the wind. The difference from the ground gained is that the wind turbines (windmills) are located offshore. The cost of installation is much higher than land areas, but also its lifetime is greater. Furthermore, the costs of foundations and anchors have fallen dramatically in recent years, bringing the price of the megawatt (MW) is same as other renewables. Denmark is the country that started offshore wind and seas are now the largest wind turbine.

Denmark, a pioneer

The first offshore wind farm consisting of 11 wind turbines, was built in Denmark in 1991 in the Baltic Sea and in 2002, following the launch of several parks with different power, opened the park Horns Rev, the largest world with 80 wind turbines with an installed capacity of 160 MW.

After the years of offshore wind energy use in Denmark one can conclude that, although it has required a significant financial investment, the production of electricity is more stable and 20% higher than onshore wind power. Furthermore, the life of the park, with good maintenance, can be doubled. Currently 50% of household electricity consumption comes from the Danish energy type.

The consumption of chocolate is “strongly associated with reduced cardiac mortality in people – not diabetic, who have survived a heart attack,” says the study published in the September issue of the Journal of Internal Medicine.

And this beneficial relationship is dose dependent, meaning that increases with the amount ingested, the study goes on to say that is worth a bit more chocolate than anything.

Due to their percentage of fat and sugar (which can vary depending on its composition), chocolate is usually banned for diabetics.

So Dr. Imre Janszky and colleagues at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, the study authors focused on the Swedes who do not have the disease, studying 1169 nondiabetic men and women between 45 and 70 who suffered a heart attack at the beginning 1990s.

Before being discharged from the hospital, they were questioned about the frequency of consumption of black or milk chocolate (daily, weekly and monthly) and its amount over the last twelve months.

It took into consideration other factors like alcohol consumption and obesity to snuff and not distort the results.

The virtues of cocoa, chocolate and by extension the black one, and were known for their effects on blood pressure and blood fluidity. Antioxidants (flavonoids), abundant in chocolate (black), could be responsible for this, so it should verify the percentage of cocoa from the tablets before buying, since some contain only 10 or 15 percent.

Other studies have shown that chocolate can reduce the mortality of elderly men in good health, and women after menopause.

Recognizing their merits, doctors are “prudent” and are careful not to encourage excessive consumption of this delicacy to the problems of overweight with those found in their offices.

A biotechnology firm creates a promising treatment

An experimental treatment developed by Genentech firm of US has obtained through genetic modification allowed a vegetable substance significantly reduce cancerous skin tumors developed, according to results of a clinical study.

This drug, GDC-0449, taken orally, blocks a protein called “hedgehog”, which plays an important role in the growth of cancer cells, according to this study released by the Internet version of the New England Journal of Medicine, a prestigious U.S. medical journal.

This treatment, developed by Genentech, a subsidiary of Swiss pharmaceutical group Roche, was obtained through genetic modification of cyclopamine, a substance extracted from the plant Veratrum californicum.

A clinical study funded by Genentech showed a tumor reduction or improvement of symptoms in 18 of the 33 patients with skin cancer following treatment, while 11 reported a stabilization of their condition for long periods. Only four patients continued growth of the tumor.

The treatment was also effective in a patient suffering from the most common type of brain cancer, medulloblastoma, whose tumor decreased significantly.

The richness of life where mega Colombian landscapes contrast with the number of deaths that occur every year by one of the most malignant diseases of the XXI century. According to the American Cancer Society, 7 million 600 thousand people died worldwide by the disease in 2007.
Research Group of Animal Biotechnology at the National University of Colombia in Medellin and Marine Natural Products, University of Antioquia, are making macroalgae feedstock, a natural source that can be used for the generation of anticancer drugs.

According to a Professor of the UN in Medellin, Juan Bautista Lopez, “in 2002 we conducted an evaluation of the effect of methanol extract of seaweeds collected in the Colombian Caribbean Coast. In the final diagnosis, we found that these marine plants have a valuable antimitotic ability, ie stop cellular activity at the stage of mitosis, similar effect generated by widely used anticancer drugs in cancer treatment as vinblastine, vincristine, colchisin and taxol.

These promising results led the researchers to propose a new problem: to explain the chemical nature of substances responsible for this activity, present in alcoholic extracts of the seaweeds.

To do this, they proceeded to isolate, purify and characterize each of the substances responsible for antimitotic activity and subsequently, apply with full certainty to macroalgae as a potential drug in cancer therapy, which can be administered with curative or palliation.

The “tomato pill” contains lycopene which is one of the main ingredients of the Mediterranean diet, which is a well know diet proven to prevent heart disease. Lycopene is an antioxidant found in tomato skin, but in its natural form it is poorly absorbed.

During a study, the scientists mixed lycopene with milk and soya bean proteins to solve the riddle of how to create a concentrated form.

The resulting pill, Ateronon, was found to reduce the level of harmful fats in the blood.

Preliminary results (only 150 cases studied) suggest that ateronon may help reduce harmful fats in the blood and prevent the build-up of plaque in the blood vessels.

The new tomato pill will not only save the lifes of people but it is also expected to cure other health problems relating to arterial damage.

A group of cosmetic surgery doctors in Great Britain carried out the first transplant of eyelashes. The patient was a 19-year-old girl that suffers from tricotilomia, a recurrent compulsive behavior that consists of ripping the hair of the head and in some cases from different parts of the body. The operation had a duration of 4 hours in which they inserted hair of the upper part of the head, exactly where the eyelashes are born.

The results of this operation are not immediate. After four months the girl will be able to notice the change hopes that he increases I number and the quality of the eyelashes. Until the moment they have only realised it in England and the United States.

“The transplant of eyelashes is very safe, he is not painful and their effects change the life of the patient” declared Shami medical Thomas who conducted the operation.

An Amazon plant would be able to constitute the base of a medicine to fight the fever of the dengue, according to Brazilian investigators. Uncaria tomentosa, this plant has antiviral properties and of regulation of the immune system, by its anti-inflammatory effects.

The infection of the fever causes fever, queasiness, headache and abdominal pain. As a last resort -known hemorragicc fever- the immune system reacts exaggeratedly causing decrease of the arterial pressure, and bled of the mucous membrane and of the weavings under the skin, what can cause the death of the patient.

“We reacted a solution containing substances extracted from cat’s claw with immune cells and noticed that the product inhibited the production of cytokines, proteins necessary to react to the inflammatory effects of dengue,” biologist Claire Kubelka, chief of the laboratory and one of the coordinators of the study, told SciDev.Net.

The researchers also found fewer dengue virus cells in immune cells that had been treated with the cat’s claw preparation.

The tests were carried out in the laboratory, but, according to the researcher, if the effects are repeated in humans, a treatment derived from cat’s claw could dampen the immune response to dengue infection and reduce the chance of death.

But years of testing remain until a medicine could be available, warns Kubelka.

No effective medicine exists so the only recommended treatment is hydrating patients while they are recovering.

Besides Uncaria tomentosa, the Brazilian group is currently looking for anti-dengue properties in solutions of approximately 15 other plants.
